Book III: Hawk’s Quest: a Superior pursuit

The year is 1864. In the aftermath of the Sioux Conflict of 1862, many families in the Minnesota River Valley are now separated. In Hawk’s Quest: a Superior pursuit, brothers Hawk and Jake Owen lead a search to find a missing child and reunite her with her family. Along the way, they become involved with state and federal authorities investigating a series of murders. This turns the brothers and their companions north toward the settlement of Grand Marais and the North Shore of Lake Superior.

This adventure, which winds its way from St. Cloud to Fort Ripley to Crow Wing to Mille Lacs Lake to the small towns of Twin Lakes, Oneota, and early Duluth, reunites old friends—Hawk, Jake, Sunkist, Posey, Sophie, and Lorraine—and calls on a few new friends and foes: Abernathy Wayne, intellectual and geologist; Reverend Diggs, town preacher; Neena, doctor of Eastern medicine; and Kathleen, a fiery Irish tavern owner. Dealing with kidnappings, disorienting swamps, separation, murder, and life-threatening ambushes, so, too, do Hawk, Jake, and their gang of adventurers encounter the real life characters of Henry Mayhew, entrepreneur, mineral prospector, and driving force behind the development of Grand Marais; Clement Beaulieu, a man instrumental in the building of the city of Crow Wing; and George Nettleton, credited with the construction of the first building in Duluth.

Hawk’s Quest: a Superior pursuit is the third and final book in the Hawk series. Authors Arvid Lloyd Williams and Bonnie Shallbetter hope that, along with enjoying the story and characters, readers gain an appreciation for Minnesota’s unique history and beauty. Now, go explore!
